Concerns
Aging is a natural biological process experienced by all humans in the same sequence - however, your personal ageing journey is influenced by a blend of genetics, lifestyle, and environmental exposure. It affects every single layer of the face: skin, fat, muscle, and bone. Understanding these changes helps us see why the surface evolves over time and why we may start to feel a disconnect between how we look and how we feel inside.
-
The science:
Skin cell turnover slows, leading to dullness, uneven tone and texture.
Collagen and elastin production drop, reducing firmness, elasticity and vitality.
Blood supply to the skin decreases, so nutrients and oxygen are delivered less efficiently.
Sun exposure and lifestyle factors considerably accelerate pigmentation, broken capillaries, and uneven tone.
How it shows:
Fine lines, crepiness, uneven texture.
“Lack of glow” or radiance.
Age spots, redness, or pigmentation.
Enlarged pores, coarseness and etched lines.
Thinning dermis, loose tissue and sagginess.
How it feels:
Patients often say they look tired even when they’re not.
Makeup doesn’t sit as smoothly, skin feels less youthful.
Patients feel their skin health is declining and contributing to the overall feeling that their skin doesn’t represent how they feel on the inside.
We can support skin health with treatments that stimulate collagen, improve hydration, and bring back vibrancy and vitality.
-
The science:
Subcutaneous fat pads shrink and shift downward with gravity. Occasionally they increase in size too.
Deep fat pads shrink in size
Bone resorption occurs in the maxillary area (front of the face), orbital rim, jaw, chin and cheekbones, altering structure and support.
Muscles can hypertrophy or weaken, changing the way the skin drapes. Overuse of the muscles over the lifetime leave static lines which essentially behave like scars in the skins surface.
Skin thickness is reduced adding to the look of depleted volumes and lack of robust coverage over the changing layers below.
As the volume loss occurs through the layers, this is amplified on the skins surface showing irregularities, assymetriees, bulging, drooping and hollowing. Getting further away from the harmonious convexities of a youthful face.
How it shows:
Hollowness under the eyes and temples.
Flattening of cheeks.
Folds around the nose and mouth
Jowling along the jawline.
Loss of chin length.
bluntening of angle of the jawline
Inverted triangle of youth (becoming wider at the bottom as we age)
Skeletal look due to global volume loss.
Sagging of tissues into adjacent areas which create folds, creases and bulging.
How it feels:
Looking “drawn,” “gaunt,” or more tired than you feel.
A sense that your face no longer looks balanced or youthful.
Tissues falling forward and downward and not in their previous “lifted” position.
Restorative treatments can help re-balance these changes for a fresher, natural appearance.
-
The science:
Dynamic lines form from repeated muscle movements (frowning, smiling, squinting).
Over time, these movements etch into the skin as static wrinkles.
Reduced skin elasticity means lines don’t bounce back as easily and eventually, not at all.
How it shows:
Vertical frown lines, horizontal forehead lines, radiating crow’s feet.
Marionette lines, lip lines, chin dimpling, flair of neck platysma which disrupts jawline definition and pulls down facial skin contributing to tissue descent and jowling
How it feels:
People sometimes worry they look stressed, angry, tired or older.
A mismatch between their facial expression and their actual emotions. Often portraying negative emotions.
Treatments may soften lines and contribute to the prevention of future static lines. A tailored multi modal approach is recommended to maintain results long term.
-
The science:
Bone resorption in the maxilla, mandible, and orbital rim reduces structural support and significant changes in facial shape and proportions.
Ligaments in the face act like anchoring points, holding tissue in place. Over time, as surrounding structures shift or lose volume, these ligaments can become more visible, creating deep lines, indents, or shadows. By carefully restoring tissue closer to its original position, we can soften the appearance of these "hard stops," reducing the visibility of ligament show and restoring a more natural, refreshed look.
Skin laxity contributes to sagging.
How it shows:
Loss of sharp jawline or chin definition and length.
Sagging under the chin or neck.
Heavier lower face and less balance between upper/mid/lower face.
How it feels:
“I don’t recognise myself in photos.”
Feeling that gravity has “taken over.”
There are subtle ways to restore balance and refresh facial contours. Multimodal approach is recommended and a tailored plan can be discussed with you in clinic.
-
The science (emotional aspect):
Changes are multi-layered, gradual, inevitable. For women, these changes are exacerbated by changing hormones.
How we perceive ageing is influenced by psychology, social pressures, and self-image. There is no right or wrong. Just your view and your preference.
How it shows:
People may avoid photos or video calls.
They may spend more on skincare or makeup to compensate.
People may stop smiling in photos
People may avoid social outings
People may become emotionally affected by their changing looks.
Some people are happy with the ageing process and simply want to take care of their face and body as best they can because tit makes them feel and look good.
How it feels:
A sense that the external appearance doesn’t match internal energy.
Some people report reduced confidence or increased self-consciousness.
